Since Covid, the vast majority of Australians prefer local products to Chinese imports

New research conducted by Roy Morgan shows the purchasing of Australian-made goods has increased since the Covid-19 pandemic hit – and sales of goods from the nation’s largest trading partner, China, have fallen.

According to the data, 93 per cent of Australians say that they prefer to buy products made in Australia, while only 21 per cent choose Chinese-made goods.

Meanwhile, keeping with the close-to-home theme, Aussies also prefer to buy goods manufactured from New Zealand rather than countries including the UK, the US, Japan and Germany.

Roy Morgan said the data also illustrates that people in Australia tend to buy goods from the Asia-Pacìic region including Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia and India.

Michele Levine, CEO of Roy Morgan, says Australian-made goods are hugely popular since international travel was cut off and transporting goods cross border became more difficult.

“Australian-made products have experienced a surge in support during 2020 with a large majority – 93 per cent – of Australians more likely to buy a product that is ‘made in Australia’, up six percentage points from 2019,” says Levine.

“Fewer than 1 per cent of Australians say they are less likely to buy a product that is ‘made in Australia,’ unchanged on a year ago.”

“Unsurprisingly it is Chinese-made goods which have fallen the most in preference and only 21 per cent of Australians say they would be more likely to buy a product that is ‘made in China’ – down nine percentage points from 2019,” she adds.

“In addition, a clear majority of 58 per cent of Australians say they would be less likely to buy a product that is ‘made in China’ – up 15 percentage points from 2019.”
